How to write an online reference

To cite an online journal or newspaper article, the page numbers section from the print journal or newspaper reference is swapped with the URL or DOI the article can be accessed from and when it was accessed. So the reference for an online journal article is: Author surname (s), initial (s).

Almost all online sources follow the above rules for in-text citations. References. APA Style requires that references include the following information (example: see image below): Author name; The publication date in parentheses which includes the year, month, and day; Title of the document; Title of the publication; Volume number

In an APA reference, the author’s name is inverted: start with the last name, followed by a comma and the initials, separated by a period and space. Treat infixes, such as “Van” or “De”, as part of the last name. Don’t include personal titles such as Ph.D. or Dr., but do include suffixes.

How to Cite Online Sources Using MLA Style. The MLA (Modern Language Association) style is usually used to cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities. Traditionally, in-text citations included the author’s last name and the page number. Obviously, this will not work for most online sources.
